Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are fabricated for patients who are missing not all but some natural teeth in an arch. A partial denture is used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw that consists of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base. The gum-colored plastic base can often be connected by a metal framework that keeps the denture in place of the patient’s mouth. Partial dentures are removable teeth replacements for missing teeth which means they can be taken in and out of the mouth. Partial dentures are also an economical alternative to patients who are tight on budget or do not want to get dental implants. Removable partial dentures consist of metal or non-metal frameworks which include clasps or hooks that latch onto the remaining teeth for retention and support. Depending upon the framework, acrylic and denture teeth can be added to replace the patient’s missing teeth.

Advantages of removable partial dentures

  • Minimal irritation and discomfort because of the lightweight material used in the fabrication procedure.
  • Its rigid frame covers less tissue of the patient’s mouth which helps to improve their overall dental health.
  • The dentures are contoured with more accuracy for the patient’s increased comfort and better fit.
  • Less invasive procedure.

Types of partial dentures

  1.  Cast metal partial dentures- Cast metal dentures consist of a metal framework which is attached through clasps that cling onto dental crowns. Patients may worry about the metal framework being visible however the gum-colored plastic will cover this part providing them a more natural look.
  2.  Flexible partial dentures- Made from realistic nylon-looking material your patient may find these more comfortable to wear. The benefit of flexible partial dentures for the wearer is that they typically respond better and adapt quicker than other types of partial dentures.
  3.  Tooth flipper- A tooth flipper is typically used as a temporary partial denture while a more long-term denture is being created. While being on the cheaper side they do allow to decrease bone loss and movement of the natural teeth through the healing process.
  4.  Fixed bridges- Fixed bridges are recommended for patients who only have one or two teeth missing. Fixed bridges require the gums and surrounding tissues to be in the perfect condition which can often be hard to have due to the missing teeth.
