An ortho appliance is a tool used to straighten teeth, prepare the teeth and mouth for braces, and aid in the braces process.
For the orthodontic treatment plan to be successful, the patient must work collaboratively with the orthodontist. Teeth and jaws can only move into the correct position if the patient wears bands (rubber bands), headgear, or other devices as prescribed.
Types of ortho appliances
- Rubber band
Wearing bands (rubber bands) is the primary method of improving occlusion in orthodontic treatment. Braces straighten teeth, but they cannot correct bite problems unless they are used in conjunction with rubber bands. Fit elastic rubbers as needed and no teeth are exposed!
- Wire
Hi-tech wire is a common part of the bracing process. Wires come in varying strengths and are used to move teeth and create space in the mouth. It’s a process. The first wire is very light and starts changing the direction of the teeth. The wire gauge will increase over time based on your treatment plan until your teeth and bite are healthy.
- Retainers
After you remove your braces, Orthodontics puts on custom retainers. Over time, the teeth will naturally move around and retainers help maintain the new alignment of the teeth after orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics encourages patients to wear retainers for the long term.
- Mouthguards
Mouthguards are used to protect your mouth from injury when participating in physical activities such as sports. The use of mouthguards is especially important for orthodontic patients to prevent damage to their teeth, jaws, and tongue.
